Demo Reel now available on DVD!!!!

Available online via YouTube or on this blog, that is! The DVD casing is just for preview purposes, designed and created solely by me and I thought it turned out great, just the way I'd intented and drafted. I'll be printing several copies that'll be sent out (as packaged in the picture) when I try to apply to get into art schools in the near future; the front includes thumbnails of full works included in the DVD, and the back contains stuff like testimonials, achievements and all that usual crap that should convince the admission panels.
(Update: the DVD disc sticker has just been completed to suit the slip design)
(Update2: As suggested by Leon, I've adjusted the hue of the front "splatter" pattern to match the back cover, giving it a shiny, golden paint feel instead of the original white, platinum sheen. However it posted some problems for the other pictures on the cover since I couldn't really make the golden splashes on the thumbnails less opaque)
(Update3: Tweaked the "stains" on the thumbnails a bit more, and make the splatters look more golden-tinged overall. Effects' nice and balanced, but I might still stick with the first draft, since it's a tad detracting from the thumbnails)

So what do you think about my design(s)?
Do post your opinions, comments, or any sort of criticisms!

  1. Cool! DVD box design looks great! But I suggest changing the DVD sticker design to match the box design.

  2. Yeah I like the DVD casing design too!

With reference to your earlier post, your drawing of Ms Liew dun look convincing leh, or at least should take off the shades. Hahaha...

Anyway, wish you all the best man!

  3. Thanks for your comments guys! I've updated the disc sticker design and changed the cover slip content to include 'A Countree' over 'Who Wants to be a SV Member' as Alvin suggested. With regards to Hwei Ee's comment: yea, my doodle of Ms Liew was badly done, I was drawing with pen and messed up her eyes so I placed shades over. So it sucked. Thanks for the wishes anyway man!

  5. Wow! This is an amazing design. It's sure to stand out from the towering pile of reels submitted by mediocre animators (like mine:(...)

I think the gold colour stands out really well on the dark blue background. You might one to consider using gold for the front as well, (since the front is the really important side.)

It seems that you got the "Resume on the back cover" idea from the Carlos Beana webinar. Good that you're following his advice:) It's really well-organized.

I'm getting to work on my design right now... Mine will probably be use a simpler, more minimalistic style.

  6. Btw, you might want to be careful with using registered trademarks like the DVD-video logo. The logo certainly makes the design look professional, but from what I've heard, there are strict rules on how, where and by whom it can be used.

Read the website carefully: http://www.dvdfllc.co.jp/ . The logo is supposed to be a symbol of legitimacy and "quality assurance", so the company wouldn't allow anybody to use it as they wish, even if it is non-commercial. I'm not too sure of the details myself, so please check it up if you want to use it.

  7. Thanks for the comment Leon! I really appreciated how critical and helpful you've been. Yes I did followed Carlos Beana's suggestions to the latter, I think it makes a very convenient package for a portfolio/resume (though I haven't written quite a formal & comprehensive resume like yours). Besides, don't worry, since we both have similar great works for our portfolio, plus you can put your 3D skills to aid your design better, I'm pretty sure your minimalist design would be really good too!

Anyway, regarding the DVD logo thing, I did placed a couple on the front and side (bottom) of the slip, but I wouldn't go so far as to acquiring licensing for this sort of thing, but yeah it does makes things look professional. By the way, I've been working around with Adobe Encore to author the DVD content/menu, and it's coming out pretty okay too.

  8. Front: Grey with a speckle of gold on the top-left.

    ...balanced with...

Back: Gold, with a tinge of grey at the bottom-right.

Verdict: Perfect harmony, achieving a state of dynamic equilibrium (using Mondriaan's language).

  9. haha Leon, good job putting SOVA theories to use, the balance wasn't really intentional as it is intuitive (so it's more like Pollack's spontaneity some how, with control over the uncontrollable 'subconsicious')

Anyway, I thought the gold tinge splatter came a bit off, so i'm sticking with the first draft...

(Update: Just polished the "stains" on the thumbnails/photos on the front to make them all golden-tinged, now the design should be balanced and finalized)
